Most people renting a dumpster are already having a stressful week. The kitchen is in pieces, the roof is half off, or a family member has passed and there is a house full of forty years to sort out. The last thing anyone needs is a hauler who quotes one price, invoices another, and drops a container across the mailbox.
We started DTR Dumpster Rental in 2014 with one truck and one rule: tell people the truth about what it costs and show up when we said we would. 12 years later that has not changed. Andre Whitfield still answers the phone most mornings, and our drivers still walk the drop before they back in.

What makes hauling in Detroit different
Placement is tighter here than it looks
The pre-war grid was laid out for a narrow original driveway and a garage at the back of the lot off the alley. Through Grosse Pointe Park, Ferndale, Oak Park, Harper Woods, Midtown Detroit and Garden City you get drives one car wide, plenty of houses with no driveway at all, and a rear alley that is the only realistic place a container fits. Detroit alleys run from perfectly usable to vacated, fly-dumped or soft after a thaw, and knowing which is which is half the job. Add Detroit Historic District Commission review in Boston-Edison, Indian Village, Palmer Woods, Sherwood Forest, West Village, Corktown and Woodbridge, and a separate right-of-way process in every suburb. Plaster, brick and a full basement
Most of the city is pre-1940 brick — bungalows, Tudors, four-squares, colonials and Victorians — with plaster and lath over wood studs inside, and that is the single most consequential sizing fact here: plaster runs roughly two to three times the weight of drywall for the same volume. Then there is the full basement under essentially every house, which is a whole extra floor of contents on any cleanout — coal bin and coal chute, the footprint of the old octopus gravity furnace, a cast-iron waste stack, a workshop bench and a fruit cellar, usually with damp and a failed sump behind it all. Pre-1980 houses turn up asbestos in floor tile and black mastic, pipe and duct wrap, plaster skim coats, cement-asbestos siding and roofing felt, and pre-1978 homes carry lead paint under the EPA RRP rule, which matters here more than almost anywhere given Detroit’s childhood lead-exposure record. Demolition generally triggers a NESHAP inspection and notification, and we cannot take asbestos-containing material in any container. Winter sets the calendar, and tear-offs run deep
The seasonal driver here is winter, not storms off the water. Ice damming backs water under shingles and into plaster ceilings, hard freeze-thaw opens flashing and mortar joints, and spring storms and straight-line wind finish what the cold started — which is why re-roofs and interior repairs stack up from March onward. What catches people on a century-old Detroit house is the multi-layer tear-off: two or three layers is the norm, and that doubles or triples the weight of the same roof area. Slate and clay tile on the bigger Boston-Edison, Palmer Woods and Indian Village houses is heavier again, cedar shake often hides under asphalt on the oldest stock, and pre-1980 roofing felt can contain asbestos. Weight, salt and keeping yard waste separate
Freeze-thaw and road salt work on flatwork here every winter, so driveways, aprons, porches and front steps get broken out and re-poured constantly — and broken concrete, brick, block, plaster, mortar and dirt at roughly 2,400–2,800 lbs per cubic yard all hit legal transport weight in a container that still looks half empty. That material belongs in a 10 yard, twice, not a 30 once. Separately, Michigan bans yard clippings from landfills under Part 115, so grass, leaves, brush and branches ride as their own clean load to a composting or organics facility rather than mixed into a construction load. Andre was the only one who asked what year the house was before he quoted a size. 1926, plaster walls, full basement. He told me straight that a 30 would go over weight before it went over the rails and put two 20s through instead. Nobody else even asked.
Second rehab I have run with DTR. What earns the repeat business is that their driver knows which alleys behind these blocks a loaded truck can actually use and which ones are a waste of everybody's morning. He also told me not to leave the can sitting open over the weekend, which was good advice I ignored once and never again.
We cleared my mother's house after forty-one years. Basement, attic and the garage off the alley. They were patient about the pace, and when we hit old pipe wrap down by the furnace their driver stopped and told us to get it tested before anything went in the can. That was the right call and it did not cost me a day.
Tear-off on a 1929 house turned out to be three layers with cedar shake underneath. I had ordered a 20. Andre had a 15 swapped in and the second one on the way before my crew got to the back slope, and he explained the weight math while he did it. Straight answer, every time I have called since.

How fast can you deliver a dumpster in Detroit?
Most of the time, same day if you call before about 11am, and next morning otherwise. We run our own trucks out of 14286 Meyers Rd in Detroit, so we are not waiting on a dispatcher two counties away. In the week after an ice storm or a straight-line wind event, or through the spring rehab rush, it can stretch to 48 hours, and we will tell you honestly when you call.
What does a flat rate actually include?
Delivery, pickup, an agreed rental period and a set tonnage allowance with disposal included. No fuel surcharge, no environmental fee, no admin fee. The only way the number changes is if you go over the weight allowance or keep the container longer than agreed, and we tell you both limits before we deliver.
Do I need to be home for delivery or pickup?
No. Plenty of our customers text us a photo of where they want it and go to work. All we need is clear access, a spot free of cars and low branches, and permission to be on the property. If the only way in is a narrow original driveway, a rear alley, or a gate beside a detached garage at the back of the lot, tell us when you book and we will schedule accordingly. On a vacant-house job say so too — a container left open on an empty block gets picked over, so placement and timing matter.
Will the dumpster damage my driveway?
We put protection boards under the wheels and rails on every residential delivery, which spreads the load instead of concentrating it on four small contact patches. The Detroit complication is what freeze-thaw and road salt have already done — plenty of aprons, drives and porch steps here are cracked, heaved or settled long before a truck arrives, so we photograph the existing condition on delivery. Narrow original drives and alley approaches get extra boards, ice on a sloped drive will stop a delivery outright, and after the spring thaw we would rather come back a day later than rut soft ground with a loaded can. Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Detroit?
On your own driveway, generally no municipal permit. In the public street, alley or right-of-way you usually do, through the City of Detroit — or MDOT on a state route like M-1 (Woodward), M-3 (Gratiot) or M-5 (Grand River). Dearborn, Redford, Southfield, Ferndale, Royal Oak, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Warren and Grosse Pointe Park each run their own right-of-way process. The one people forget is the historic district: Boston-Edison, Indian Village, Palmer Woods, Sherwood Forest, West Village, Corktown and Woodbridge sit under Detroit Historic District Commission review, which can add an approval step before exterior work starts. What can I not put in the dumpster?
Wet paint, solvents, motor oil, fuel, pesticides, automotive chemicals, asbestos-containing material, propane and other pressurised cylinders, lead-acid batteries, medical waste, whole tires and refrigerant appliances. Leftover paint, solvents, fuel and pesticides go to a Wayne County or municipal household hazardous waste day rather than in the can. Michigan also bans yard clippings from landfills under Part 115 — grass, leaves, brush and branches go to a composting or organics facility as their own clean load, never mixed into a construction load. Everything else on a normal cleanout or renovation is fine. Rules do change, so ask us before it goes in.
