A hook truck backs in, the container rolls down the rails onto the ground, and when it is full the same truck winches it back up and hauls it to the scale. The Five Sizes And What They Are For
The 10 yard is the heavy-material box — concrete, brick, dirt, tile and slate — and it reaches its weight limit while it still looks half empty. The 15 is the residential workhorse for a basement cleanout, a bathroom gut or a single-layer tear-off. The 20 yard covers a whole-floor remodel or a retail bay turnover. The 30 is the rehab and construction standard, where swap count drives the schedule more than footprint does. The 40 yard only earns its place on light bulky debris with room to spot it, and never on masonry. Weight limits apply to every size, and the smaller box you can actually fill beats the bigger one you cannot. We need roughly sixty feet of straight approach, about ten to twelve feet of width, and clear space overhead for the hoist — low limbs and service drops decide more placements than people expect. Protection boards go under the rails every single time and we photograph the ground before the container touches it. Swaps go out next day, so call before the box is completely full and the crew never has to stop. How does a roll-off delivery actually work?
A hook truck backs into the spot, tilts the bed, and the container rolls down the rails onto protection boards. We need a straight run of roughly sixty feet, about twelve feet of width and clear overhead space. Nobody has to be home if the placement is agreed in advance and the area is clear of parked cars. When you are finished, one call and the truck winches the box back up and hauls it to the scale.
How long is a standard rental period?
Most residential jobs run a few days to a week and most job sites run on a scheduled swap instead. We build the window around the work rather than around a fixed calendar, and if the job runs long, tell us before the box overflows. In winter we prefer not to leave a container parked through a hard freeze, because ice, plow windrows and a can frozen to the ground make the pull harder on everybody involved.
What cannot go in the container?
No asbestos-containing material, no liquid paint, solvents, fuel or automotive fluids, no whole tires, no lead-acid batteries and no appliances still holding refrigerant. Michigan also bans grass, leaves, brush and branches from landfills, so yard material travels as a separate clean load. Household chemicals belong at a Wayne County hazardous waste drop-off. Do I need a permit for a roll-off?
Not on your own driveway or private lot, which covers the large majority of the sets we do. A container occupying a public street, alley right-of-way, sidewalk or parking lane is a different matter and the city handles that through a permit. Start with the City of Detroit, and note that each suburb runs its own ordinance. Requirements and fees change, so confirm before delivery rather than after.
