Nearly every house we set a container at in Detroit was built before 1940, and that changes the whole job. Behind the walls is plaster and lath over wood studs, and plaster runs roughly two to three times the weight of drywall for the same volume. Under the house is a full basement, which means the accumulation is never in one garage — it is spread across a basement with a coal chute and an old octopus furnace footprint, an attic, a back bedroom and a detached garage at the rear of the lot.
Access is the other half of it. Original driveways here are narrow, poured long before anybody owned a full-size truck, and freeze-thaw has cracked most of the aprons. Plenty of houses on the older grid have no driveway at all, and the rear alley is the only realistic place to set a can. Sizing A Container For A Detroit House
A 15 yard is the size we set most often on residential streets here. It fits a narrow original driveway with room to walk past it, it sits low enough to load over the side, and it handles a basement cleanout or a bathroom gut without running out of room. Step up to a 20 yard when a whole floor of plaster is coming down along with cabinetry and flooring. Drop to a 10 yard for anything dense — chimney brick, a busted basement floor, tile and mortar — because weight closes those jobs out while the walls still look half empty. The mistake we correct most often is somebody booking the biggest box on the list for a heavy load and then paying to move a lot of empty steel.

Protection boards go under the rails on every residential set and we photograph the surface before the container touches it. Detroit aprons take a beating from freeze-thaw, and a drive that already has a spider-web crack across it will not improve under a loaded can, so we will say honestly when the flat firm ground beside the drive is the better call. Where there is no driveway the alley is usually the answer, and we look at it first, because some are clear and quick and some are soft after a thaw or blocked with dumped material. In winter, ice on a sloped drive stops a delivery outright, plows throw windrows against a parked container, and a can left sitting too long can freeze to the ground. Keep the cars off, keep the load level with the top rail, and read the protection guide before delivery day.

Residential Dumpster Rental FAQs
Do I need a permit for a dumpster at my Detroit home?
Not if the container stays on your own driveway, which is where the large majority of residential drops go. A permit or right-of-way approval comes into play when the box has to sit in the public street, and on blocks with no driveway that does happen. Start with the City of Detroit and read our Detroit permit guide. Requirements get amended, so confirm the current rule before delivery day.
My house is in Boston-Edison. Does historic review affect this?
It affects the work more than the container. Boston-Edison, Indian Village, Palmer Woods, Sherwood Forest, West Village, Corktown and Woodbridge sit under Historic District Commission review, so exterior changes — windows, roofing, porches, siding — often need approval before anything starts. The dumpster itself is generally a placement question rather than a review question, but the project it serves may not be. Check with the city early, because district boundaries and rules do get revised.
How much heavier is plaster than drywall?
Figure two to three times the weight for the same volume once you add the wood lath and the nails. That is why a container looking two-thirds full of plaster can already be at its limit. If you are gutting more than a room or two, plan on either a smaller box swapped twice or a mid-size box you deliberately do not fill to the rails. What about asbestos and lead paint in an older Detroit house?
Take it seriously here. Pre-1980 houses routinely carry asbestos in floor tile and mastic, pipe and duct wrap, plaster skim coats, siding and roofing felt, and anything pre-1978 is presumed to have lead paint under the EPA renovation rule. We cannot accept asbestos-containing material in any container and will reschedule rather than haul a contaminated load. EGLE and the EPA set the requirements, and those change.
Where do leftover paint and household chemicals go?
Not in the container. Liquid paint, solvents, pesticides, fuel and automotive fluids are household hazardous waste and they belong at a Wayne County or municipal drop-off event rather than in a roll-off. Dried-out latex cans with the lids off are usually acceptable, but ask us first. Wayne County publishes the current drop-off dates and accepted items, and that list gets revised season to season.
